Playing Santa
For the ninth year, work is do this pretty cool thing. They sponsor Head Start children (Head Start is a Federally funded, non-profit program for preschool aged children from low-income families). What that means is shortly before Thanksgiving a list of ~50 names (66 this year because another sponsor bailed) is posted along with the child's name, age and what they'd like for the holidays.
I picked out a boy and girl from the list shortly after it was posted. My friend Clara thought this was a great idea and asked if she could "have" one my kids, so I said yes. Then when I finally got back to work on Friday, there were still kids who needed sponsors, so I picked another little girl.
Today I checked the list again and every child has a sponsor!
On December 12th, all of the presents have to be at work (wrapped) so the Head Start people can pick them up. Each child will also get a coloring book and crayons with their presents. After the kids get their presents, we always get a really nice thank you card (I'll take a picture this year).

Things that "my" kids requested:
Barbie doll
Hello Kitty doll
hair accessories
Barbie doll
talking dog (I got a Clifford that barks and is generally silly)
Power Ranger
Policeman figure
motorcycle toy

that's a great program!
It's a lot of fun. Plus I get to buy kid stuff.
