Reading

I'd started reading book 10 of The Wheel of Time series, but it was a heavy book, both physically (700 pages, hard back) and mentally (Jordan has so damn many characters in his books it's tough to keep them all straight) that I needed to put it aside for now.

So, I read "Sick Puppy" by Carl Hiaasen. I had a hard time putting it down.

I'll be starting "Basket Case" tonight.

Eric loves that series. His friends have been fanatical about it ever since high school or whenever the books came out smile So I read your post to him and he smiled!

Basket Case is great. It's my favorite Hiassen book so far.

I'm only on book 4 of the wheel of time series - its taking me ages but its great. Have you tried Tad William's Otherland series? Fantastic!

Jordan grows tiresome after the fifth book or so, as all the characters devolve into cliches.

All the women sniff haughtily; Ninaeve and her damned tugging of her braid, and her lusting for Lan; all the men thinking all the other men know more about women than they, themselves, do, and a whole lot more.

Not to mention that nothing happens for thousands of pages in 6-8. We just picked up 9 in paperback . . . well, because. We're going to regret it, I know. I prefer Martin's towering series, or Williams' Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series (and Otherland).

Might I recommend Guy Gavriel Kay, if you've not read his stuff? Or Robin Hobb. Both are wonderful writers.

My husband loves Jordan's books. I think if I read your statement about Jordan having too many characters to him that he'd probably agree. His main complaint was that Jordan added too many characters to late in the story. He thinks that Jordan should be starting to wrap things up instead on expanding. Me, I gave up trying to read Jordan after the first book...short attention span and all. tongue

I've read some of Tad Williams' books, but I don't recall them being part of a series.

I've read some Guy Gavriel Kay too, but not for a while.

We (Brad and I) have also read the Goodkind books (Sword of Truth series).

I'm going to make notes & additions to my amazon list so I remember all of these cool suggestions.

I'll get back to the Jordan book sooner or later though, because I usually finish books. I'm weird that way.

Thanks for all of the input, everyone!
