Riddle me this...

| silly funny stuff | | Comments (5)

See how many you can figure out without scouring the Internet. (From a mailing list I'm on.)

1. What does a diamond become when it is placed in water?
2. What did the big rose say to the little rose?
3. What is it that doesn't ask questions, but must be answered?
4. What does a chicken do when it stands on one foot?
5. What kind of bird has wings, but can't fly?

6. What two words have the most letters in them?
7. What has neither flesh nor bone but has four fingers and a thumb?
8. What is it that grows larger the more you take away from it?
9. Poke out its eye and it has nothing left by a nose. What is it?
10. What runs all day and never walks, often murmurs, never talks, has a bed and never sleeps, has a mouth and never eats?
11. Which side of a pitcher is the handle on?
12. If two is company, and three's a crowd, how much is four and five?
13. What fruit do you find on a dime?
14. How can you divide 10 potatoes equally between three people?
15. What is no larger when it weighs 20 pounds than when it weighs 1 pound?
16. No sooner spoken than broken. What is it?
17. What falls but never breaks? What breaks but never falls?

Ack! I need the answers! How could you post all those questions and not post the answers!?

Here lies Melissa,
She died of curiosity.

Well, since the public demands answers, I guess I'll put up my guesses smile

1. I have no idea
2. "Hey Bud"
3. Doorbell or a telephone (or maybe just a door)
4. I don't remember
5. I said penguin, but I think there's probably more of a riddle answer here
6. most letters (arrggghhh ;-)
7. a fleshless,boneless hand tongue (seriously - I forget this one, too)
8. a hole
9. I'm thinking a needle, but it doesn't TOTALLY make sense (so, no idea on this one either)
10. a river
11. the outside
12. 9
13. I can't think of the pun for this one either, but my gut is screaming pineapple (I think that's because I want that for breakfast, though tongue)
14. cut one in thirds (I'm sure there's a more clever answer)
15. I'm thinking air, but I don't think that's right
16. silence
17. falls but never breaks - a waterfall? I don't know
and breaks but never falls, I'm not sure either.

Here's the intended answers:

1. Wet
2. "Hey Bud"
3. Telephone
4. Holds up the other one
5. A dead bird
6. "Post office"
7. A glove
8. A hole
9. NOISE (poke out the I... left with NOSE...)
10. A river
11. The outside
12. Nine
13. A date
14. Mash them
15. A scale
16. Silence
17. Night and day

Of those, I'd say that only the following were true riddles: 7, 8, 10, 15, 16, 17. Anything that could have multiple answers, or the answer is silly, is not a proper riddle in my book. Shame, too, because I love good riddles.

Me!

All love is work. The notion that it can, or should, be effortless is something foisted on us by literature and the movies, I think. But even knowing that doesn't proof one against the occasional case of the "Idonwannas!" -Pat Kight, alt.poly
