Road rage

| daily misc | | Comments (3)

They were taking road rage stories this morning on the radio and it got me thinking. I don't generally get road rage. Sometimes I get annoyed, but for the most part, I don't bother getting worked up by stupid drivers. I blame this on a road rage story I heard years ago.

Dave and I lived in a townhouse in Lawrenceville, NJ. We knew our neighbors (enough to say hi and chat). One day the place next door was empty.

The story was that they had been driving home from the movies and some guy cut them off. So they got ahead of him and flipped him off. The guy followed them home (they tried to lose him, but were less successful than they realized). Later (another day), the guy came back with a gun and either shot up their car or their front door. I can't remember which anymore.

They moved away and we never saw them again.

That definitely cured me of flipping people off. At most I'll say something snarky but not loud enough for anyone but me (and whoever might be in the car) to hear.

Twice in my life I've flipped the bird and been pursued. Once by a pedestrian. He jumped in front of my car in a busy intersection, so I honked. He flipped me the bird, so I returned the favor. He ran a block the harass me at my parking garage. Had it not been for the attendant, there would have been violence.

The second time, I was in Clarendon, and this asshat just shoves his car into reverse in the middle of traffic with no warning, causing me to swerve. I honked and vigorously applied the bird. The guy gave up his parking space to chase me. He was an asshat. And I am a better driver.

I've had some cases of roadrage, mostly due to slow traffic though, in which case, there's nobody to flip off. I do it sometimes still, but never where the asshat can see it. So many stupid people out there, it's best to be a bit careful...
