Appreciated

| work related stuff | | Comments (6)

I've spent a lot of hours over the last few weeks working with a vendor of ours in NYC. He really appreciated all of my work and today I got a small gift basket from him.

It's nice to be appreciated like that.

Wow. That is nice! You must've made quite an impression.

Nothing says appreciation like a nice kickback. Do you think that vendor sends gift baskets to other people, like his car mechanic or dentist or plumber? Hopefully you're not working for any government-funded institution. Because if so, you might want to look at the Anti-Kickback Enforcement Act of 1986.

Nope, I don't work for any government funded institution.

Why the angry face? I'm just making an observation. Do you think it's common practice for that vendor to send gift baskets to people who work hard or perform a job well outside of his work? Of course he's not going to send a gift basket to his car mechanic because he's paying the mechanic to do a job. So why did you receive one? The idea of a kickback is to obtain favoritism, and it obviously worked. Sold! Get angry at me if you want for presenting the truth. But getting angry at me doesn't change the facts.

The angry face was actually not really related to anything other than my mood and I apologize for using it inappropriately.

The guy who sent me the gift basket does not pay me for services. He and I spent a ton of time working on something (long distance) and he sent a thank you. I don't have anything to do with vendor selection, so there are no worries that my opinion matters.

What he did really doesn't seem that different to me than if I thank my particular project team for a job well done by giving them movie passes. I'd personally be paying for the passes and giving them to the people of my own choosing. Or if I treat for lunch.

It's all about recognizing exceptional work. Do you think differently?

I can understand your situation now. My comments on the kickbacks would be more related to the vendors we deal with, not yours. I pictured yours being similar.
