Computer update

| techie stuff | | Comments (3)

So it's not the power supply. The clip that holds the cooling fan onto the CPU was broken. Brad and I wandered over to CompUSA to find a new case (because at that point, the theory was just that the CPU was getting overheated). So I picked out a new case (see new pimp daddy case below).

Brad moved all of the pieces-parts from the old case to the new one and... yup, same behavior (basically the box starts to boot, goes through some basic Windows stuff and then power cycles). So he's thinking that maybe my Windows install got corrupted. He said he'll take a spare drive we have around and pop that in the new case to see if a clean install helps (I need to save too much stuff to do a clean install on my drive without getting the box up and running first). If not, then the theory will be that I have a dead CPU.

So much fun should not be allowed!

Seymour's computer did the same thing awhile back -- we also assumed it was a bad power supply, but it turned out to be a corrupt windows install. I hope it all works out for you soon! (Nice case, by the way!)

Zuly: My fingers are crossed! And I don't mind the new case thing so much. I didn't want to spend that money right now, but it's a cool case, so I'll live. smile

So, here's the status.

The new PC works fine. The CPU seems to have survived the ordeal, or so I believe. However, the old OS install is completely toast, so Lisa gets to spend some time today moving files around to ensure nothing is lost.

The CD/MP3/AM/FM piece of the hardware works when the PC is off, which is interesting for people who want to use the box in a home theater setting. It's a pretty slick piece of hardware integration.

With all luck, Lisa will have a fully functional PC again by the end of the day.
