Ack!

bloghosts — an important announcement

Several technical problems with our backend have corrupted critical portions of our billing and support databases. While we have tried to recover this data several times and enlisted the help of an outside agency our efforts have been in vain. Although security has been very good we've found several discrepancies in our logs indicating the damage may have been intentional. For these reasons we have decided to stop taking new orders and will eventually cease operation altogether.

All servers will be monitored and remain online until January 1, 2005.

So I'm shopping for a new host. Requirements: SSH access, ability to play with Perl or PHP as needed, ability to install MovableType, etc.

I'm kind of considering BlogMoxie or Pair.

Any other suggestions?

Ouch! Good they at least gave you some time to move.
Well I know you have had trouble with godaddy as a blog server, so I won't suggest that smile I'll be interested to see what you do find!

My host (voxelhosting.com) is pretty good but she's not a big company, she's a stay at home mom who does this on the side. I've been with her for a long time and she's always extremely helpful and responsive. Not only that, she's come be a great friend as well.

I've been using Pair for years and have been very happy. You pay a little bit more than other companies for CGI access but they are their own entity. They're not reselling space from another provider. Most things you have to configure yourself though. You can run Movable Type and pretty much any program you want but you have to install them.

The one problem I've had in the past was with "The Reaper". It's a program that kills runaway programs and scripts on their servers. When I had MT3.0D installed, I couldn't reliably post to my weblog with ecto. The xmlrpc script would take up too many resources and get killed. Ever since upgrading to MT3.1 though everything has been fine.

They've got a great admin interface that makes setting up a lot of backend things like databases, email addresses, and dns very easy.

I use Textdrive (textdrive.com) and they're wonderful.

Plans from $12. There's nothing you need that they don't have, and they're always open to adding things customers want.

There is no shell access, but Powweb is a great host. They have just added load-balancing servers to the mix for maximum uptime and speed.

I recommend my host, cyberpixels.com. I get all the stuff you need to install MT, and just about anything else you can think of.

200mb space, 1gb traffic, 200 pop3 emails, ssh, perl php, cgibin all that...

TLC Web Enterprises is AWESOME and very reasonably priced -- and customer service is first rate.

And one more to add to your list. No shell access, but prices are reasonable and they support MT superbly. Blogomania - http://www.blogomania.com

Cyberwurx is has been in business since 1997 offering professional hosting solutions. They have blog-specific plans that start as low as $5/month: http://www.cyberwurx.com/blog.html

You can call toll free or write them about SSH access. PHP, Perl, MySQL, cron all not a problem, also comes with CPanel.

They also have new plans specialized for podcasting that aren't even published yet, so if you do any type of audioblogging or podcasting, ask them about that.
