Home brewed AC

For all of my sweltering friends back east...

How to build a $30 air conditioner

An enterprising college student built an air conditioner for under $30 with a fan, a garbage can of ice water and some tubing.

How the contraption works: cold ice water flows through coiled tubing attached to the back of a fan which cools the blowing air. The condensation could get messy and you won't get the same results as a store-bought A/C, but this is a cool (har) DIY project for the broke and sweaty.

Except, of course, that you'll notice the key ingredient is ice. Which, hey, if you really want a good use for the ice, why not put it into a glass of water and drink it? I mean, your fridge went to all the trouble of making it, right? (And let's not go into the amount of heat you're putting back into the house by making said ice... we do all know how refrigerators work, yes?)

Yeah, but you could run to the store and pick up bags of ice pretty cheaply too.

But, point taken. smile

Neat idea.
Of course it sounds a little like a 'swamp cooler' aka 'Aspen cooler'. Of course swamp coolers don't work so well when you start with 99% humidity. It helps if you start with say less than 50% humidity - know anyplace like that ;-) .
Always neat to hear about thinking 'outside the box'! smile
