This is not a real owl...
It lives on the roof of the house next door. We have one that sits on a barrel by the house right behind us too. I'm not really sure what its purpose is but I see it when I look outside my windows and go "Oooh!" and then "oh right".
PS: My face isn't that bruised... it's a very light bruise that probably only I notice because I can see the shadowing of it so no pictures.

I think they're used to try and scare off squirrels. Pretty sure the owl is one of their natural predators.
I don't think it ever ends up working, though.
they use them in our neighborhood to keep the birds away when you seed your lawn..
